old meets new – Asahi 50mm lens attached to the digital body

sometimes i do this – i leave my house with the manual Ashai lens attached to my digital camera. i introduced the technique of freelensing in my old posts, but when i have this magic M42 to EF ring, i can use it in absolutely usual fully attached and not too dangerous way. during last few weeks of using it i find myself quite addicted to this combination and even stopped to push the Back Focus Button with my thumb 🙂

my question – what is the reason for this sudden love ? the focus is not too sharp as we love to have it during digital photography invasion. the manual focusing is much slower than fully automatic focus of a most slow digital camera. i’m trying to find additional “negative” sides, but i can’t.
about this lens – not expensive – around $80-120 for very good (mint) condition as i have. but now when i write this i remembered that my one was even chiper – this indicates that prices continue to rise. for my i choose a Super-Takumar not Super Multi Coated (SMC) Takumar with a goal to have this fantastic and creamy lens flare. these days i’m looking for 28mm f/3.5 additional lens – i really love to be wider (in terms of lenses angle) with it and to have more unmanaged light inside of my frames.

much more posts about this combination are coming very soon – collaboration with friends and portraits, night shootings during torrential rain in the southern TelAviv – most of this already taken and the pictures are waiting for my attention.

say me what you think about

  1. THe first one is quite appocaliptic (Nine inch nails playing in my head…) I really like the waves and the red pillow (there’s a story in there) Otherwise, a very nice soft colour set of images. I just really want to connect them somehow. Maybe its just me, thats what i try to achieve in my own work, most of the time i fail… 🙂 cheers Victor

    1. The first and second taken during the Wanton-destruction behind the scenes night shootings (see my previous post about) all the monitors were crashed with guitars and other gear (the images of this action still not published). The pillow and the drawing board i found in the room in a village were i slept last weekend and all this was highlighted so nice at morning. Your connections and stories are beautiful and interesting for me Yuri – like the one that you posted a few minutes ago 😉

  2. Love the images with that Pentax. I use my old Helios-44-2 2/58mm on my little Olympus EPL1 from time to time, and really like the images, only slight downside is, it is 116mm on the Olympus, having said that sometimes it’s an advantage.:>)

  3. it’s always a joy to use old lenses and these are lovely shots. my preferred one it’s that w/ the young bowie. if I’m not wrog it’s ChangesOneBowie vynil.
