Crazy mix – Rodinal and HC110 in one cocktail p2.
Hi all! I put already the sequence of the images intended for this post, but spontaneously decided to change the topic of this post to something more neutral and finish what I started publishing a long time ago. The band photography theme post i will publish next time. And today my photography is dedicated to the sea, the shore of a fishing village and an unexpectedly successful experiment in the developing process of black and white film already described in one of the older publications.
The first time I visited Jisr az-Zarqa was in 2012. I think that one day i will repost my documentary series of photographs taken there. I returned there after 11 long years and this time I continued my frequent visits for almost a whole year. Little has changed there in these 11 years and the blue simple boats are still blue. the food in the fishermen’s “restaurants” is delicious and the people are friendly and ready for a long “small talk” about weather, fishing and being.
Some technical details: ilford HP5 exposed manually at box speed. Rodinal 2ml Kodak HC110 2ml 500ml of 20C water. 45 minutes of semi-stand developing process – yes, I made a correction and gently agitated the tank in the middle. Stop 1min with water and the regular fixing process. I moved to the alkaline Ilford Rapid Fixer, instead of the fast but very aggressive acid-based Fomafix, which I finished recently and don’t think about to return using it again.
Then I ended the post with these words – “In the next post I will write about this wonderful location – the Arabs Fisherman’s Village of Jisr Zarqa, located in the Center of the country”. Now is the time to continue with the images from this roll and maybe in very close future i will sort and post here my photo notes and observations about simple life on the seashore.
Lovely photographs. However, I’m sorry I need to correct you in one detail. Ilford Rapid Fix is acidic. Looking at the data sheet you’ll see the pH is 5.0-5.5. I do this so any Pyro users don’t think it’s alkaline. Again, lovely photographs and nice developer idea.
Huge thank you John for taking a look and very nice words. I don’t remember where i read that its Acidic but sure you’re right – the best way to know it is to read the pH numbers 😉 My mistake -.i will correct the text.

Can I ask, what were you hoping to get from the mix of HC110 and Rodinal? I’m interested in your thought process for the mix of developers for your semi stand dev

As i wrote in the first part – i was motivated by the video of Stephen Schaub about his experiments with the different developers. I didn’t have any special hopes, maybe to make the results of stand developing with Rodinal to look less flat in terms of the contrasts between highlights and shadows. I fond these working for me well from his samples provided in this video. I tried this technique only once and maybe i will find some motivation to make this again 🙂

Have you discussed how you scan your images?
Hi Matt ! thank you for taking a look ! I scanned these negatives as usual one by one by putting the negatives directly to the Epson v800 scanner’s glass with another thin glass holding the negative in a flat position. Not much contrasts and brightness correction with SilverFast9 and final export from RAW Tiff to jpg within LR 5.6 as usual without cropping.
Gotcha. I also use Silverfast 9. I use the Lomography Digitaliza for 120 film. I might try your method at some point… I’d got newton rings in the past though.
Sometimes i get these rings but only on color film. Never on BW. And i use 99% BW so. o problem for me. This method is slower then any other but finally i shot film with the goal to slow down so i dont in hurry to any place.
Interesting. Now you mention it, I think I’ve only seen them on color film too.
Wow. Rodinal and HC110. OMG, I had used those developers a good 40+ years ago. Never in combination mind you. Fascinating imagery. Love the densities of black and greys [Ansel Adams Zone System 0-V & VI]. So now you’ve fired up my “film creature” and feeling excited shooting [and developing!] 120 and 35mm film yet again.
