cinematheque from a close distance

 Cinematheque from a close distance.

After numerous posts of photographs from the series “Cinematheque” it is time to write a short article “how, when and why”.

As I said in my previous post “how to break the rules and to stay alive” it was just try to bring some different look and feeling to my attend in “street photography”. What describes this timeless “cinema” look for me ? First of all the cropped 16:9 frame ratio – exactly like movie that we love to watch in the cinema – this almost forgotten look of the 1.85:1 or 1.66:1 movie ratios standards. As usual, I try to crop my frames during the shoots and to leave the subject of interest in the middle of the frame and to have some negative space on bottom and top parts with the goal just to cut these parts while editing in Lightroom. The next component is high Aperture for the same almost “everything in blur” mood (kind of tilt-shift effect in Photoshop but created in the natural-optical way). I use the maximal aperture value – it f/2 that I can set on the 135mm f/2 – my famous lens for this project or f/1.4-f/2 when i stuck with 50mm and this is only what i have for the moment.

Perspectives and angles – in most of my shoots for Cinematheque project i shoot parallel to ground and compress the distance with 135mm. This compression creates the blur. Blur and dreamy, blurred colors create the element of presence and cinematic look. Shooting at evening time, when the light is soft, and shades are not too harsh just help me to achieve the goal.

I’ll happy to get your tips if you have to add something, and your feedback of course.

  1. Victor- when you say you compress the image distance. Do you do this as you shoot or do you shoot a Raw image and edit the Raw image afterwards. I know a Raw image takes up much space on your disc. But also, you may want to do some other things with the image? Thank you for your time. Be Well.

    1. Yes i shot RAW for better quality and do nothing for this compress of distance, but for this project i only use 135mm long lens and shot everything on High aperture as said in explain. this technique creates this effect of distance compression.. i prefer not to edit much.
      good night !
